Understanding Why Alberto Gonzales May Go

AlbertogonzalesThe scuttlebutt is that President Bush may soon be looking for a new Attorney General. While Don Rumsfeld and his bungled war plan withered criticism for years, Gonzales has been pushed to the brink in a matter of weeks, and for issues that few seem to clearly understand. Yes, we know that it’s all over the firing of eight federal prosecutors. Yet what’s specifically bothering Congress on both sides of the aisle is a little harder to pin down. We could spell out some of the issues here, but it seems more worth listening tothis podcast from The Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School (iTunes Feed Web Site). During this 80-minute talk (which takes almost 7 minutes to get really going, so consider fast-forwarding ahead), a panel of highly-placed speakers, including one of the US Attorneys who unceremoniously lost his job, offer some detailed background and explain exactly what transpired.

Here is a full list of the speakers: Professor David Barron of Harvard Law School; Ari Shapiro, Justice Reporter, Washington Desk, National Public Radio; Stuart Gerson, former Acting Attorney General and former Assistant Attorney General, Civil Division, DOJ; Bud Cummins, former US Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas (2001-2006), and Elliot Mincberg, Chief Counsel for Oversight and Investigations, House Judiciary Committee.
