In 1999, AlekÂsanÂdr Petrov won the AcadÂeÂmy Award for Short Film (among othÂer awards) for a film that folÂlows the plot line of Ernest HemÂingÂway’s clasÂsic novelÂla, The Old Man and the Sea (1952). As notÂed here, PetroÂv’s techÂnique involves paintÂing pasÂtels on glass, and he and his son paintÂed a total of 29,000 images. Rather incredÂiÂble. Above, we present the 20 minute short.

This small perÂfect movie is one of the best I’ve seen lateÂly! I have fished, friends of mine fish now off Cape Cod, the book has always been a favorite of mine and this short “gem” is the crux of it all!
Thank you.…
This is an art masÂterÂpiece that should be played in every design and art school…
HemÂingÂway is acknowlÂedged as great at conÂveyÂing moods and emoÂtions in his works. He is like SteinÂbeck. HemÂingÂway had the abilÂiÂty to use the lanÂguage and the variÂable emoÂtionÂal effects of words, printÂed on a page to project the readÂer into the stoÂry; in that the readÂer beomes the charÂacÂter.
The old man, SanÂtiÂaÂgo, is a glyph, a symÂbol even an icon repÂreÂsentÂing the strugÂgle, vicÂtoÂry, tragedy, loss, rebuÂtal, denial and fate of all men who subÂmit to beg to their charÂter we will all of us, fail, judged by human or humanÂist valÂues. Yet in our MHS (mind, heart, spirÂit) we preÂvail — this is the mesÂsage of the stoÂry. ergo what othÂer men think is not imporÂtant, what I think is all that matÂters.
AbsoluteÂly fantastic.…I almost wept
AweÂsome
AstonÂishÂing, an absolute masÂterÂpiece, I feel like sobÂbing.
One of the most beauÂtiÂful movies of all time. A masÂterÂpiece that so few have seen. EveryÂone who loves beauÂty deserves to see this.
TruÂly a beauÂtiÂful work of art
What a wonÂderÂful way to add to an already great work. Thank you Dad and son for 26,000 paintÂings that, togethÂer, creÂate the visuÂal beauÂty of this film. DavyJ
