I couldn’t find a mention – which license did Dr. James Kibbie use for the recording? Did he put them in the public domain?
Being Bach was born in 1685 and copyright is good for 75 years. See http://www.pdinfo.com/copyrt.php. There is no license required. So shut up you twit.
But derived works and compilations are the property of the person doing the work, even if the tunes are out of (c)
Correct in the abstract, but wrong here. Compilations, edited versions–which are almost always what is published, and performance can have copyrights in force owned by the compiler, editor, or performer, respectively.
@Techguy2600: read up on the difference between “publication copyright” (which Bach’s original publication would fall under, and therefore has fallen into PD), and “performance copyright”, which is the copyright of the recording (in this case, of Dr. Kibbie)… in which case, the copyright stopwatch started ticking only after the recording engineer pressed “STOP” on the recorder.
IF Dr. Kibbie owns his recordings. Are you sure these aren’t under a lable, who would then own the rights.
