The Case for Studying Physics in a Charming Animated Video

Xiangjun Shi, oth­er­wise known as Shix­ie, stud­ied ani­ma­tion at RISD and physics at Brown. Then, she har­nessed her train­ing in both dis­ci­plines to cre­ate an ani­ma­tion explain­ing the virtue of study­ing physics. Pret­ty quick­ly, it gets to the crux of the mat­ter: Study­ing physics will change how you see the world and how you under­stand your place in it, all while let­ting you wrap your mind around some pret­ty elec­tri­fy­ing con­cepts. I think I’m sold!

    Very nice.nnThat said, and I hate to nit­pick, but I feel the need to point out that schiz­o­phre­nia is NOT the con­di­tion of hav­ing mul­ti­ple per­son­al­i­ties or “split per­son­al­i­ties.” Rather, it is a men­tal ill­ness asso­ci­at­ed with audi­to­ry and visu­al hal­lu­ci­na­tions, para­noia and cog­ni­tive dys­func­tion. It is a very debil­i­tat­ing dis­ease, and not a sub­ject for humor­ous metaphor.

    Per­son­al­ly, I don’t think that there’s any case for study­ing physics in a charm­ing ani­mat­ed video; you either do it at uni­ver­si­ty or online. Those are the only two options that I would consider.nI base this on the fact that, if I was in a “Charm­ing ani­mat­ed video”, I prob­a­bly would­n’t get to choose which char­ac­ter I was if I did­n’t direct it, and that would just add to my learn­ing dif­fi­cul­ties. Phy­ics isn’t that easy a sub­ject you know.

    Sor­ry to dis­agree. I think this is high­ly pre­ten­tious. If one wants to be an artist (for exam­ple) it is a per­fect­ly valid deci­sion, pro­vid­ed it is a sat­is­fy­ing expe­ri­ence for the con­cerned indi­vid­ual and brings joy to the art lover. How­ev­er, this cha­rade of hav­ing a deep­er under­stand­ing of things with­out any observ­able evidence/conclusions is dis­hon­est at best. Feyn­man’s “char­ac­ter of the phys­i­cal law” clear­ly illus­trates this point.
