A quick fyi: The New YorkÂer has just launched a new poetÂry podÂcast, and it’s introÂduced and hostÂed by Paul MulÂdoon, the Pulitzer Prize-winÂning poet who forÂmerÂly taught poetÂry at Oxford. On The New YorkÂer’s web site, MulÂdoon writes:
I can’t be but thrilled at the prospect of the first of a series of New YorkÂer PoetÂry PodÂcasts. For decades, The New YorkÂer has led the field of poetÂry in print jourÂnalÂism. But the eye is not the only buyÂer into, and benÂeÂfiÂciaÂry of, the poem. The ear has been in the poetÂry busiÂness for much longer, givÂen poetry’s oriÂgins in the oral traÂdiÂtion. That’s why it’s parÂticÂuÂlarÂly approÂpriÂate for us to take this opporÂtuÂniÂty to foreÂground poetÂry as an aurÂal expeÂriÂence.
He then explains the forÂmat of the podÂcast. “Each podÂcast conÂsists of a conÂverÂsaÂtion between myself and a guest poet. In each, the guest reads not only a poem of hers that has appeared in The New YorkÂer but also introÂduces, and reads, a poem by anothÂer conÂtribÂuÂtor to the magÂaÂzine that she parÂticÂuÂlarÂly admires.” The first episode feaÂtures Philip Levine. Feel free to play it above.
You can subÂscribe to The PoetÂry podÂcast on iTunes, and it should evenÂtuÂalÂly find a home (I’d imagÂine) on SoundÂCloud too. More poems read aloud can be found in our colÂlecÂtion of Free Audio Books.
