Once the MOOC “revÂoÂluÂtion” got underÂway, uniÂverÂsiÂties, usuÂalÂly slow-movÂing and tight-fistÂed instiÂtuÂtions, couldÂn’t run fast enough to put their own MOOCs online. And, right now, we’re seeÂing the results. In JanÂuÂary alone, 180 MOOCs from major interÂnaÂtionÂal uniÂverÂsiÂties, will get underÂway. Below we’ve highÂlightÂed some of the coursÂes that intrigued us most, but you can peruse the comÂplete list here and make your own choicÂes.
If you haven’t tried a free MOOC, I’d do it soonÂer than latÂer. In recent weeks, the whole MOOC project took a hit when a UniÂverÂsiÂty of PennÂsylÂvaÂnia study found what was becomÂing empirÂiÂcalÂly obviÂous — that MOOCs genÂerÂalÂly have very low parÂticÂiÂpaÂtion and comÂpleÂtion rates, and what’s more, most of the stuÂdents takÂing the coursÂes are “disÂproÂporÂtionÂateÂly eduÂcatÂed, male, [and] wealthy,” and from the UnitÂed States. This study, comÂbined with othÂer disÂapÂpointÂing experÂiÂments and findÂings, will likeÂly make uniÂverÂsiÂties think twice about sinkÂing monÂey into creÂatÂing MOOCs (they can cost anyÂwhere from $15,000 to $50,000 to develÂop). It might take anothÂer 6–12 months to see the shift. But I’d hazÂard a guess that this JanÂuÂary might be the peak of the free MOOC trend. Enjoy them while they last. WhatÂevÂer their shortÂcomÂings, they can be quite inforÂmaÂtive, and you can’t beat the price.

It’s curiÂous why high school and Junior ColÂlege teachÂers are not embracÂing MOOCs and incorÂpoÂratÂing it into high school classÂes, even if only for extra credÂit.
