Sasha TruÂbetÂskoy, an underÂgrad at U. ChicaÂgo, has creÂatÂed a “subÂway-style diaÂgram of the major Roman roads, based on the Empire of ca. 125 AD.” DrawÂing on Stanford’s ORBIS modÂel, The PelaÂgios Project, and the AntoÂnine ItinÂerÂary, TruÂbetÂskoy’s map comÂbines well-known hisÂtoric roads, like the Via Appia, with lessÂer-known ones (in somes casÂes givÂen imagÂined names). If you want to get a sense of scale, it would take, TruÂbetÂskoy tells us, “two months to walk on foot from Rome to ByzanÂtium. If you had a horse, it would only take you a month.”
