We lived in one world before August 6, 1945, and have lived in anothÂer ever since. Nobody underÂstood this more clearÂly than Albert EinÂstein, who had advoÂcatÂed for the research that culÂmiÂnatÂed in that day. “A letÂter from Dr. EinÂstein in 1939 informed PresÂiÂdent RooÂsevelt that the GerÂmans were engaged in the develÂopÂment of an atomÂic bomb and urged that sciÂence and techÂnolÂoÂgy in the UnitÂed States be mobiÂlized on a simÂiÂlar effort,” says a 1946 New York Times artiÂcle. “This [1939] letÂter gave the first impeÂtus to the develÂopÂment of the AtomÂic Bomb.” This stoÂry was includÂed by way of conÂtext of a new call to action by EinÂstein and othÂer promiÂnent sciÂenÂtists, one meant to secure humanÂiÂty’s future in a world with the bomb.
“Our world faces a criÂsis as yet unperÂceived by those posÂsessÂing powÂer to make great deciÂsions for good or evil,” declares a telegram sent by EinÂstein to what the Times calls “sevÂerÂal hunÂdred promiÂnent AmerÂiÂcans.” “The unleashed powÂer of the atom has changed everyÂthing save our modes of thinkÂing and we thus drift toward unparÂalÂleled catÂaÂstroÂphe. We sciÂenÂtists who released this immense powÂer have an overÂwhelmÂing responÂsiÂbilÂiÂty in this world life-and-death strugÂgle to harÂness the atom for the benÂeÂfit of mankind and not for humanity’s destrucÂtion.”
Hence the forÂmaÂtion of the EmerÂgency ComÂmitÂtee of AtomÂic SciÂenÂtists, chaired by EinÂstein and includÂing as memÂbers such figÂures as Hans A. Bethe, who’d directÂed the TheÂoÂretÂiÂcal DiviÂsion at Los AlamÂos, and Leo SziÂlard, EinÂstein’s colÂlabÂoÂraÂtor on the 1939 letÂter to RooÂsevelt.
SziÂlard also appears along EinÂstein in the colÂorized short film clip above, in which they lisÂten to a verÂsion of their telegram read aloud “We beg you to supÂport our efforts to bring realÂizaÂtion to AmerÂiÂca that mankind’s desÂtiny is being decidÂed today, now, this moment,” reads the announcÂer. The telegram itself specÂiÂfies that “we need two hunÂdred thouÂsand dolÂlars at once for a nation-wide camÂpaign to let the peoÂple know that a new type of thinkÂing is essenÂtial if mankind is to surÂvive and move toward highÂer levÂels.” In othÂer words, one mindÂset had enabled the creÂation of nuclear weapons, and quite anothÂer was needÂed to preÂvent them from ever being used again. In 1954, the year before his death, EinÂstein wrote that “I made one great misÂtake in my life — when I signed the letÂter to PresÂiÂdent RooÂsevelt recÂomÂmendÂing that atom bombs be made.” It’s one kind of ambiÂtion to change the mind of a politiÂcian, and quite anothÂer to change the mind of humanÂiÂty.
