If you’re watchÂing how MOOCs are playÂing out, you might want to read the New YorkÂer’s recent artiÂcle, Will MOOCs Be Flukes?. It docÂuÂments how “enthuÂsiÂasm for MOOCs has waned in the past year.” The probÂlem lies in MOOCs very design. By their very nature, MOOCs are “masÂsive and open, which means that it can be easy to get lost in them.” As a result, MOOC “comÂpleÂtion rates are abysmal.” Although some well-eduÂcatÂed, self-motiÂvatÂed stuÂdents have sucÂceedÂed in comÂpletÂing these coursÂes, MOOCs have not been “effecÂtive at servÂing the stuÂdents who needÂed eduÂcaÂtionÂal resources the most.” The finanÂcialÂly and geoÂgraphÂiÂcalÂly disÂadÂvanÂtaged.
