The evoÂluÂtion of StanÂley KubrickÂ’s earÂly career looks someÂthing like this. A young Kubrick gradÂuÂates from high school in 1945, and almost immeÂdiÂateÂly starts workÂing for LOOK MagÂaÂzine as a phoÂtoÂjourÂnalÂist, where he masÂters his visuÂal craft. (You can see a good samÂpling of his phoÂtoÂgraphÂic work right here.) By the earÂly 1950s, Kubrick has his sights set on motion picÂtures, and, after shootÂing a couÂple of short docÂuÂmenÂtaries, he gets to work on feaÂture films. His first proÂducÂtion, Fear and Desire (1953), is someÂthing of a letÂdown. Though critÂics give it sound reviews, Kubrick is unhapÂpy with the result, and he works hard to remove all existÂing copies from cirÂcuÂlaÂtion. Even so, you can still find grainy copies online.
Fast forÂward two years, and Kubrick, now 26, borÂrows $40,000 from his uncle and shoots Killer’s Kiss, a movie that sits squareÂly in the film noir traÂdiÂtion. (Get more noir films here.) It’s short, runÂning only 67 minÂutes. It passÂes the litÂmus test for Kubrick himÂself, offiÂcialÂly launchÂing his filmÂmakÂing career. And the mini noir is now availÂable on DaiÂly Motion. We also have Killer’s Kiss and Fear and Desire listÂed in our colÂlecÂtion of Free Online Movies. Enjoy…
