MadÂman or visionÂary? A litÂtle of both? A genius? A brand? A menÂsch? David Lynch was all these things and more, and this fan-made video above serves as a quick reminder of the career and the conÂsisÂtenÂcy of the film director/artist/transcendental medÂiÂtaÂtor who passed away last year.
EarÂly in the video we see one of the director’s pubÂlicÂiÂty stunts, when he sat in a chair on the corÂner of La Brea and HolÂlyÂwood, next to a cow and a large poster of LauÂra Dern. No, the cow had nothÂing to do with the film he was promoting—2006’s Inland Empire—but it did stop trafÂfic and draw attenÂtion. Lynch didn’t have an adverÂtisÂing budÂget to proÂmote LauÂra Dern’s lead role in the film, so the cow had to do.
LauÂra Dern appeared in a majorÂiÂty of Lynch’s films beginÂning with 1986’s Blue VelÂvet, and the video honÂors their friendÂship (he called her “TidÂbit”) as well as his colÂlabÂoÂraÂtions with Kyle MacLachÂlan (who Lynch called “Kale”) and NaoÂmi Watts. All three obviÂousÂly adored him.
There’s also a comÂpiÂlaÂtion of Lynch swearÂing like a champ. ProdÂuct placeÂment in film is “bullÂshit,” probÂlems on set are “fuckÂing nuts,” and for those who sat through the “peanut sweepÂing” scene in Twin Peaks The Return, you’ll underÂstand his outÂburst on set: “Who gives a fuc&ing $hit how long a scene is?”
We’ve linked preÂviÂousÂly to Lynch’s video where he makes quinoa, and this short edit sums up that video niceÂly. It’s also nice to see attenÂtion givÂen to The Straight StoÂry, which usuÂalÂly gets passed over in his filÂmogÂraÂphy, despite (or maybe because of) being his sweetÂest movie.
There’s also a reminder that Lynch made videos from quarÂanÂtine in his Los AngeÂles home. Not only did he delivÂer the daiÂly weathÂer reports like he used to, but he also announced “Today’s NumÂber,” which caused quite a lot of anxÂiÂety in the YouTube comÂments. (Why no sevÂen? WHY NO NUMBER 7?)
The video ends with Lynch’s theÂoÂry about catchÂing ideas like fish—we’ve also highÂlightÂed this before—and then a loveÂly monÂtage of title cards, remindÂing us all that “DirectÂed by David Lynch” remains a guarÂanÂteed sign of qualÂiÂty.
