It took nearÂly 50 years. WKRP in CincinÂnati is no longer just a TV sitÂcom. It’s now a real radio staÂtion in CincinÂnati.
A CinÂcy-area FM staÂtion, known as “The Oasis,” has adoptÂed the WKRP call letÂters after acquirÂing them from a nonÂprofÂit radio staÂtion in North CarÂoliÂna. The Raleigh-based staÂtion put the call letÂters up for aucÂtion as part of a fundraisÂing effort. And then The Oasis snapped them up.
To mark the offiÂcial launch last week, the staÂtion played the TV show’s theme song for six straight hours. MovÂing forÂward, the staÂtion will conÂtinÂue playÂing clasÂsic rock from the ’60s through the ’80s — much like the music feaÂtured on the 1978–82 sitÂcom. As a bonus, Gary Sandy, who played proÂgram direcÂtor Andy Travis, has recordÂed proÂmos for the revived WKRP. If the origÂiÂnal show was before your time, you can watch some episodes on YouTube. Enjoy…
