You can expeÂriÂence DosÂtoÂevsky in the origÂiÂnal. You can expeÂriÂence DosÂtoÂevsky in transÂlaÂtion. Or how about an expeÂriÂence of DosÂtoÂevsky in aniÂmaÂtion? Today we’ve roundÂed up two parÂticÂuÂlarÂly notable examÂples of that last, both of which take up their unconÂvenÂtionÂal project of adapÂtaÂtion with suitÂably unconÂvenÂtionÂal aniÂmaÂtion techÂniques. At the top of the post, we have the first part (and just below we have the secÂond) of DosÂtoÂevsky’s stoÂry “The Dream of a RidicuÂlous Man,” re-imagÂined by RussÂian aniÂmaÂtor AlexanÂder Petrov.
The aniÂmaÂtion, as Josh Jones wrote here in 2014, “uses painstakÂingÂly hand-paintÂed cells to bring to life the alterÂnate world the narÂraÂtor finds himÂself navÂiÂgatÂing in his dream. From the flickÂerÂing lamps against the dreaÂry, darkÂened cityscape of the ridicuÂlous man’s wakÂing life to the shiftÂing, sunÂlit sands of the dreamÂworld, each detail of the stoÂry is fineÂly renÂdered with meticÂuÂlous care.” A hauntÂing visuÂal style for this hauntÂing piece of late DosÂtoÂevsky in full-on exisÂtenÂtialÂist mode.
Just below, you can see a longer and more ambiÂtious adapÂtaÂtion of one of DosÂtoÂevsky’s much longer, much more ambiÂtious works: Crime and PunÂishÂment. This half-hour aniÂmatÂed verÂsion by PolÂish filmÂmakÂer Piotr Dumala, Mike Springer wrote here in 2012, gets “told expresÂsionÂisÂtiÂcalÂly, withÂout diaÂlogue and with an altered flow of time. The comÂplex and mulÂti-layÂered novÂel is pared down to a few cenÂtral charÂacÂters and events,” all of them porÂtrayed with a form of labor-intenÂsive “destrucÂtive aniÂmaÂtion” in which Dumala engraved, paintÂed over, and then re-engraved each frame on plasÂter, a method where “each image exists only long enough to be phoÂtographed and then paintÂed over to creÂate a sense of moveÂment.”
If you’d now like to plunge into DosÂtoÂevsky’s litÂerÂary world and find out if it comÂpels you, too, to creÂate strikÂingÂly unconÂvenÂtionÂal aniÂmaÂtions — or any othÂer sort of project inspired by the writer’s epic grapÂpling with life’s greatÂest, most trouÂbling themes — you can do it for free with our colÂlecÂtion of DosÂtoÂevsky eBooks and audioÂbooks.
