Among my works, the one I like best is the Home that I have had built in Milan for accomÂmoÂdatÂing old singers not favored by forÂtune, or who, when they were young did not posÂsess the virtue of savÂing. Poor and dear comÂpanÂions of my life!
—Giuseppe VerÂdi
Is there a remÂeÂdy for the isoÂlaÂtion of old age?
What about the jolÂly fraÂterÂniÂty and comÂpetÂiÂtiveÂness of an art colÂlege dorm, as enviÂsioned by opera comÂposÂer Giuseppe VerÂdi?
ShortÂly before his death, the comÂposÂer donatÂed all royÂalÂties from his operas to the conÂstrucÂtion and adminÂisÂtraÂtion of a luxÂuÂriÂous retreat for retired musiÂcians, designed by his librettist’s brothÂer, archiÂtect CamilÂlo Boito.
ComÂpletÂed in 1899, Casa VerÂdi still serves elderÂly musiÂcians today—up to 60 at a time. ResÂiÂdents of Casa VerÂdi include alumÂnae of the MetÂroÂpolÂiÂtan Opera and the RoyÂal Opera House. Guests have worked alongÂside such notaÂbles as Chet BakÂer and Maria Callas.
ComÂpeÂtiÂtion for resÂiÂdenÂtial slots is stiff. To qualÂiÂfy, one must have been a proÂfesÂsionÂal musiÂcian or music teacher. Those selectÂed enjoy room, board, and medÂical treatÂment in addiÂtion to, writes The New York Times, “access to conÂcerts, music rooms, 15 pianos, a large organ, harps, drum sets and the comÂpaÂny of their peers.” MusiÂcal proÂgramÂming is as conÂstant as the fine view of Verdi’s grave.
DinÂing tables are named in honÂor of Verdi’s works. Those inclined to worÂship do so in a chapel named for SanÂta CecilÂia, the patron saint of musiÂcians.
PracÂtice rooms are alive with the sound of music and critÂiÂcism. As Casa Verdi’s music therÂaÂpist told the FinanÂcial Times, “They are very comÂpetÂiÂtive: they are all priÂma donÂnas.”
When memÂoÂry fails, resÂiÂdents can tune in to such docÂuÂmenÂtaries as actor Dustin Hoffman’s Tosca’s Kiss, below
