In a series of short films, direcÂtor KirÂby FerÂguÂson has been gradÂuÂalÂly makÂing the case that “EveryÂthing is a Remix” — that great art doesÂn’t come out of nowhere. Artists inevitably borÂrow from one anothÂer, drawÂing on past ideas and conÂvenÂtions, then turnÂing these mateÂriÂals into someÂthing beauÂtiÂful and new. The first film highÂlightÂed the role of remixÂing in litÂerÂaÂture and music. The secÂond installÂment shiftÂed the focus to filmÂmakÂing, while the third turned to techÂnolÂoÂgy, comÂputÂers and user interÂfaces. Today, FerÂguÂson released the fourth and final installÂment — “SysÂtem FailÂure” — which makes the arguÂment that ever-expandÂing copyÂright laws, despite what our FoundÂing Fathers intendÂed, now tilt in favor of corÂpoÂrate interÂests rather than the social good. And, more omiÂnousÂly, they threatÂen to put the brakes on an essenÂtial part of the creÂative process. If you’ve enjoyed this series, which you can watch in full above, you can supÂport FerÂguÂson’s next project, This is Not a ConÂspirÂaÂcy TheÂoÂry, on KickÂStarter.
