It makes sense that SuperÂman would take a tolÂerÂant view of immiÂgrants and othÂer minoriÂties, givÂen that he himÂself arrived on Earth as a refugee from the planÂet KrypÂton.
The Man of Steel may strike you as an unlikeÂly mouthÂpiece for proÂgresÂsive ideals, but 1950 found him on a book covÂer, above, engaged in conÂverÂsaÂtion with a small crowd of mostÂly white boys:
“…and rememÂber, boys and girls, your school – like our counÂtry – is made up of AmerÂiÂcans of many difÂferÂent races, reliÂgions and nationÂal oriÂgins, so … If YOU hear anyÂbody talk against a schoolÂmate or anyÂone else because of his reliÂgion, race or nationÂal oriÂgin – don’t wait: tell him THAT KIND OF TALK IS UN-AMERICAN. HELP KEEP YOUR SCHOOL ALL-AMERICAN!”
In othÂer words, citÂiÂzens must steel themÂselves to take action, because you can’t always count on a superÂhero to show up and make things right.
The cheap paper jackÂet, above, was disÂtribÂuted to school chilÂdren by the InstiÂtute For AmerÂiÂcan DemocÂraÂcy, an offÂshoot of the New York-based Anti-DefamaÂtion League.
MeanÂwhile, a full colÂor verÂsion of the 66-year-old illusÂtraÂtion has been makÂing the rounds on social media. Let us conÂsidÂer it a placeÂholdÂer. EvenÂtuÂalÂly someÂone will sureÂly take it back to the drawÂing board to add more girls, chilÂdren with disÂabilÂiÂties, and chilÂdren of colÂor.
