From 1945 to 1951, DisÂney proÂduced a series of eduÂcaÂtionÂal films to be shown in AmerÂiÂcan schools. How to bathe an infant. How not to catch a cold. Why you shouldn’t driÂve fast. DisÂney covÂered these subÂjects in its eduÂcaÂtionÂal shorts, and then evenÂtuÂalÂly got to the touchy subÂject of biolÂoÂgy and sexÂuÂalÂiÂty. If there was ever a comÂpaÂny suitÂed to talk about “vagiÂnas” in the 1940s in a famÂiÂly-friendÂly way, it was DisÂney. Hence The StoÂry of MenÂstruÂaÂtion.
The film runs 10 minÂutes, comÂbinÂing sciÂenÂtifÂic facts with hygiene tips, and it was actuÂalÂly comÂmisÂsioned by the InterÂnaÂtionÂal CelÂlo-CotÂton ComÂpaÂny, the foreÂrunÂner of KimÂberÂly-Clark, the makÂer of Kotex prodÂucts. An estiÂmatÂed 105 milÂlion stuÂdents watched the film in sex-ed classÂes across the US. And, accordÂing to TinÂker Belles and Evil Queens: The Walt DisÂney ComÂpaÂny from the Inside Out, the film remained a mainÂstay in schools until the 1960s. It’s now in the pubÂlic domain.
