Even if you don’t know the myth by name, you know the stoÂry. In Greek mytholÂoÂgy, SisyÂphus, King of Corinth, was punÂished “for his self-aggranÂdizÂing craftiÂness and deceitÂfulÂness by being forced to roll an immense boulÂder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, repeatÂing this action for eterÂniÂty.” In modÂern times, this stoÂry inspired Albert Camus to write “The Myth of SisyÂphus,” an essay where he famousÂly introÂduced his conÂcept of the “absurd” and idenÂtiÂfied SisyÂphus as the absurd hero. And it proÂvidÂed the creÂative mateÂrÂiÂal for a breathÂtakÂingÂly good aniÂmaÂtion creÂatÂed by MarÂcell Jankovics in 1974. The film, notes the annoÂtaÂtion that accomÂpaÂnies the aniÂmaÂtion on YouTube, is “preÂsentÂed in a sinÂgle, unbroÂken shot, conÂsistÂing of a dynamÂic line drawÂing of SisyÂphus, the stone, and the mounÂtainÂside.” FitÂtingÂly, Jankovics’ litÂtle masÂterÂpiece was nomÂiÂnatÂed for the Best AniÂmatÂed Short Film at the 48th AcadÂeÂmy Awards.
