Lloyd Kahn worked as an insurÂance broÂker before quitÂting in 1965. Then, he took a turn into the DIY buildÂing moveÂment that emerged with the 1960s counÂterÂculÂture. Soon enough, he found himÂself editÂing the influÂenÂtial Whole Earth CatÂaÂlog and pubÂlishÂing ShelÂter in 1973, a book still conÂsidÂered the bible of hand-built homes. Now 91 years old, Lloyd remains active in pubÂlishÂing. He also conÂtinÂues to run, padÂdleÂboard, and skateÂboard, a sport he took up when he turned 65. How many peoÂple can say that?
In the video above, SierÂra Clark takes you inside LloyÂd’s world, givÂing you a snapÂshot of his unconÂvenÂtionÂal life. With a great touch, she highÂlights the habits and phiÂlosÂoÂphy that have allowed him to live and age in a remarkÂable way. StayÂing curiÂous and advenÂturÂous, tryÂing new things, keepÂing in motion, eatÂing well, makÂing life and exerÂcise fun—they’re all part of the mix for Lloyd. For Kahn, “Stay hunÂgry, stay foolÂish” (the sayÂing that appeared on the back of the last Whole Earth CatÂaÂlog) isn’t just a motÂto. It has been a true way of life.
