Open online coursÂes—masÂsive or otherwise—are revÂoÂluÂtionÂizÂing highÂer eduÂcaÂtion by makÂing learnÂing more and more accesÂsiÂble.
Carnegie MelÂlon UniÂverÂsiÂty has takÂen online coursÂes to anothÂer levÂel, offerÂing virÂtuÂal classÂroom enviÂronÂments based on deep research into how adults learn.
The coursÂes are free. Carnegie Mellon’s Open LearnÂing IniÂtiaÂtive curÂrentÂly offers 15 coursÂes through a platÂform that proÂvides tarÂgetÂed progress feedÂback to stuÂdents.
The proÂgram doesn’t offer course credÂit or cerÂtifiÂcates but the coursÂes are sophisÂtiÂcatÂed. CMU spent anyÂwhere from $500,000 to $1 milÂlion for each course to write the softÂware, which includes a course builder proÂgram for instrucÂtors and a sysÂtem of feedÂback loops that send stuÂdent learnÂing data to the instrucÂtor, the stuÂdent and the course design team.
More than 10,000 stuÂdents enrolled in OLI coursÂes last year. So far CMU proÂmotes OLI coursÂes as supÂpleÂmenÂtary to traÂdiÂtionÂal classÂroom instrucÂtion. But the coursÂes are cerÂtainÂly rich enough to be enjoyed by anyÂone. They’re mostÂly in the sciÂences but include a few lanÂguage and social sciÂence classÂes too.
The list of curÂrentÂly-availÂable coursÂes appears below. We also have them listÂed in our comÂplete list of MasÂsive Open Online CoursÂes from Great UniÂverÂsiÂties (many of which hapÂpen to offer cerÂtifiÂcates too):
