Not long ago we postÂed a beauÂtiÂful scene feaÂturÂing the legÂendary guiÂtarist AndrĂ©s Segovia playÂing Johann SebasÂtÂian Bach at the AlhamÂbra, the stoÂried 14th cenÂtuÂry MoorÂish palace in GranaÂda, Spain. Today we’re pleased to bring you the entire 50-minute film from which it came, AndrĂ©s Segovia: The Song of the GuiÂtar.
The docÂuÂmenÂtary was made in 1976 by the South African-born filmÂmakÂer ChristoÂpher Nupen. Segovia was 84 years old at the time. When he was a child livÂing in GranaÂda, Segovia loved to bring his guiÂtar to the AlhamÂbra and play for friends. “It was here,” he says in the film, “that I opened my eyes to the beauÂty of nature and art. To be here is to feel oneÂself to be near, very near, parÂadise.” Segovia is often described as the father of modÂern clasÂsiÂcal guiÂtar. In the linÂer notes to the film, which is availÂable on DVD along with anothÂer film on Segovia by Nupen, it says:
As an instruÂmenÂtalÂist, Segovia did for the guiÂtar what Casals did for the celÂlo, but he did it with an instruÂment that had nevÂer before been takÂen seriÂousÂly as a conÂcert instruÂment. WithÂin his own lifeÂtime, Segovia taught himÂself the instruÂment, revÂoÂluÂtionised the techÂnique and eleÂvatÂed a folk instruÂment to the highÂest levÂels of the interÂnaÂtionÂal conÂcert platÂform. As a musiÂcian, he has come to be recogÂnised as one of the most refined and proÂfound of his time.
In the film, Segovia remÂiÂnisces about his earÂly days in GrenaÂda and his hapÂpy disÂcovÂery of the guiÂtar. He plays ten pieces, all beauÂtiÂfulÂly filmed in the courtÂyards of the AlhamÂbra:
- “CapriÂcho Catalán” by Isaac AlbĂ©niz
- “La Maja de Goya” by Enrique GranaÂdos
- “Torre BermeÂja” by Isaac AlbĂ©niz
- “Sonata in E Minor” by DomeniÂco ScarÂlatÂti
- “MinÂuet” by Jean-Philippe Rameau
- “MinÂuet” by FerÂnanÂdo Sor
- “BalÂlet and AlleÂgretÂto” by Manuel Ponce
- “Gavotte I & II” by Johann SebasÂtÂian Bach
- “LeyenÂda” by Isaac AlbĂ©niz
- “El Noi de la Mare” a CataÂlan folk song
