Every day, inside our body, there is a war going on. MicroÂscopÂic invaders of one kind or anothÂer try to make a meal of us, and our immune sysÂtem fights back, seekÂing out the invaders and destroyÂing them. One of our body’s most imporÂtant foot-solÂdiers in this war is the T cell, a type of white blood cell with recepÂtors that can recÂogÂnize forÂeign subÂstances. Like all white blood cells, T cells origÂiÂnate in the bone marÂrow, but then they migrate to an organ called the thyÂmus (hence the “T” in “T cell”), where they evolve into speÂcialÂized immune sysÂtem warÂriors. Mature T cells, which leave the thyÂmus and cirÂcuÂlate around the body, come in difÂferÂent types. One type, the cytoÂtoxÂic T cell, speÂcialÂizes in attackÂing and killing cells of the body that are infectÂed by virusÂes, bacÂteÂria, or canÂcer.
Which is where this fasÂciÂnatÂing litÂtle video comes in. It shows a cytoÂtoxÂic T cell (also known as a “killer T cell”) attackÂing a canÂcerÂous cell. The process is shown at 92 times the actuÂal speed. And for a sense of scale, a cytoÂtoxÂic T cell is only 10 microns long, or about one-tenth the width of a human hair.
