There’s nothÂing funÂny about the ravÂages of highÂly addicÂtive narÂcotics or gangÂland turf wars. NevÂerÂtheÂless, Vince Gilligan’s rivÂetÂing hit BreakÂing Bad manÂaged to start on a (yes, darkÂly) comÂic note that still sounds occaÂsionÂalÂly as the show hurÂtles toward its fateÂful conÂcluÂsion this SunÂday. (Conan O’Brien has had a lot of fun with these moments in parÂoÂdies of the show’s charÂacÂters’ quirks and its someÂtimes-grueÂsome desert absurÂdiÂties.)
What anchors the show, even when it veers into galÂlows humor, is its sense of authenÂticÂiÂty. Despite BreakÂing Bad’s theatrical—almost Shakespearean—plotting, GilliÂgan and his writÂers have takÂen care to build a very believÂable scafÂfoldÂing behind every outÂraÂgeous set piece, even when it comes to the sciÂence of perÂfecÂtionÂisÂtic chemÂistry teacher WalÂter White’s super high-qualÂiÂty crysÂtal methamÂphetÂaÂmine. In order to get the sciÂence right, GilliÂgan approached DonÂna NelÂson, ProÂfesÂsor of OrganÂic ChemÂistry at the UniÂverÂsiÂty of OklaÂhoma.
NelÂson doesn’t only conÂsult on the nature of illicÂit chemÂiÂcal comÂpounds; she has also proÂvidÂed the show’s writÂers with insights into the motiÂvaÂtions and methÂods of chemists and teachÂers. As NelÂson says, “to us who are eduÂcatÂed in sciÂence, whenÂevÂer we see sciÂence preÂsentÂed inacÂcuÂrateÂly, it’s like finÂgerÂnails on a blackÂboard. It just driÂves us crazy, and we can’t stay immersed in the show.” As a BreakÂing Bad fan who is, I’ll be honÂest, largeÂly chemÂistry-illitÂerÂate, I’d still credÂit some of my immerÂsion to how real the sciÂence feels, a by-prodÂuct, sureÂly, of how genÂuine it is. Watch ProÂfesÂsor NelÂson in the video above, proÂduced by the AmerÂiÂcan ChemÂiÂcal SociÂety, explain how the show creÂatÂed its illuÂsions with the stuff of 100% real sciÂence.
Well, okay, it’s maybe more like 96%. As you might have susÂpectÂed, the sigÂnaÂture powÂder blue colÂor of Walter’s prodÂuct is pure draÂmatÂic invenÂtion.
