Those of us interÂestÂed in explorÂing the myrÂiÂad free coursÂes availÂable online will appreÂciÂate the work being done at P2PU. It’s perÂhaps a funÂny name when you first say it out loud, but P2PU’s approach and origÂiÂnal learnÂing conÂtent are for real.
You may have guessed what the name stands for: peer to peer uniÂverÂsiÂty. P2PU’s modÂel is innoÂvÂaÂtive. Their idea is that takÂing an online course should be more like learnÂing on the job than takÂing a traÂdiÂtionÂal class. Their approach encourÂages peoÂple to work togethÂer on projects—whether learnÂing comÂputÂing proÂgramÂming or someÂthing else—and to assess one another’s work with conÂstrucÂtive feedÂback.
Users can design their own coursÂes with help from P2PU. Course design is broÂken down into disÂcrete steps and course conÂtent is vetÂted by peer users and P2PU staff.
CoursÂes are hands-on and super varÂied. One course lets users take a hack at designÂing their own big game—the kind that gets adults out in the streets defendÂing a founÂtain or hidÂing treaÂsures under bus stop benchÂes. AnothÂer coursÂes lays out the steps for makÂing a music video. FifÂteen othÂer peoÂple are already takÂing the chalÂlenge. Two have comÂpletÂed it and four menÂtors have offered their help.
One of the most popÂuÂlar coursÂes is about writÂing for the web. The comÂments secÂtions for each step are liveÂly and filled with links to real blogs. ParÂticÂiÂpants in this course share their writÂing and opinÂions about what makes for good web writÂing.
One of the site’s othÂer well-subÂscribed coursÂes teachÂes parÂticÂiÂpants how to proÂgram using the TwitÂter API. P2PU breaks the chalÂlenge down into nine steps (the first of which is to introÂduce yourÂself to othÂers already takÂing the course). ParÂticÂiÂpants proÂceed at their own pace and can reach out for help to othÂer stuÂdents, menÂtors and P2PU staff along the way.
Not all of the coursÂes focus on new techÂnoloÂgies. Always useÂful and nevÂer out-of-date, this course is a perÂfect fit for numÂber noobs.
You can find a list of P2Pu’s new coursÂes here. And while you’ve got your thinkÂing cap on, don’t forÂget our big list of 500 Free Online CoursÂes.
