Today is the 200th birthÂday of Charles DickÂens. He was born in Portsmouth, EngÂland on FebÂruÂary 7, 1812, the secÂond of eight chilÂdren. When he was 12 years old his father was sent to debtors’ prison, along with most of his famÂiÂly, and Charles went to live with a friend of the famÂiÂly, an impovÂerÂished old lady. He was forced to quit school and work in a blackÂing facÂtoÂry, where he pastÂed labels on jars of shoe polÂish.
DickÂens nevÂer forÂgot those earÂly trauÂmas. He incorÂpoÂratÂed his expeÂriÂences and obserÂvaÂtions of social injusÂtice into his works, includÂing David CopÂperÂfield, OlivÂer Twist and A ChristÂmas CarÂol. (Find free novÂels below.) He was the most popÂuÂlar writer of VicÂtoÂriÂan EngÂland, a virÂtuÂal rock star in the days before recordÂed music and movies. His stoÂries, pubÂlished seriÂalÂly in magÂaÂzines, were eagerÂly awaitÂed by the pubÂlic. Most have remained in print ever since.
The DickÂens bicenÂteÂnary is being celÂeÂbratÂed with speÂcial events around the world, includÂing a wreath-layÂing cerÂeÂmoÂny this mornÂing at Poets’ CorÂner in WestÂminÂster Abbey, where actor and filmÂmakÂer Ralph Fiennes, author Claire TomaÂlin, and two of DickÂenÂs’s descenÂdants are schedÂuled to give readÂings.
