Unmanned aerÂiÂal vehiÂcles, more colÂloÂquiÂalÂly known as drones, have drawn bad press in recent years: as the intruÂsive tools of the comÂing surÂveilÂlance state, as delivÂerÂers of death from above in a host of war zones, as the purÂchase-delivÂerÂing harÂbinÂgers of world domÂiÂnaÂtion by Amazon.com. But as with any techÂnolÂoÂgy, you can also use drones for the good, or at least for the interÂestÂing. A numÂber of urban phoÂtogÂraÂphers have attractÂed a great deal of attenÂtion in the past few months doing just that, buyÂing or buildÂing camÂera-equipped drones of their own, takÂing to the skies above their cities, and capÂturÂing views of them we’d nevÂer see othÂerÂwise. I live in Los AngeÂles and like to think I explore its ever-more-reviÂtalÂized downÂtown (from which I type this post) on a regÂuÂlar basis, but nearÂly every shot Ian Wood got in the earÂly mornÂing with his drone in the video above shows off an aesÂthetÂic eleÂment of the neighÂborÂhood I hadÂn’t noticed before.
Above, Randy Scott Slavin proÂvides us an equalÂly dreamÂlike drone’s eye view of AmerÂiÂca’s othÂer metropÂoÂlis, New York City, and below that you can also get a sweepÂing view of LonÂdon, its archiÂtecÂturÂal icons on full disÂplay, from sure-handÂed drone pilot/cameraman Evan SkuthorÂpe.
Then we have a flight around the monÂuÂments of MexÂiÂco City, in my expeÂriÂence an endÂlessÂly fasÂciÂnatÂing place from any altiÂtude and at any angle, by A&H AerÂiÂal ProÂducÂtions.
Those of you who know Bangkok might feel starÂtled to get the highÂly unusuÂal view of it, nearÂly free of peoÂple proÂvidÂed by Coconuts TV, who took a camÂera drone out on a day when proÂtestÂers shut down sevÂen of the city’s most vital interÂsecÂtions. (It reminds me of a few favorite moments by that most celÂeÂbratÂed Thai “auteur of lanÂguor,” ApichatÂpong Weerasethakul.) But you may have noticed that all the videos here focus on depopÂuÂlatÂed places, due most likeÂly to the tricky host of applicÂaÂble laws to do with priÂvaÂcy and aerÂiÂal phoÂtogÂraÂphy. So if you decide to film a drone flyÂthrough of your own city, perÂhaps have a chat with your lawyer first.
