A great film traÂdiÂtion – the WestÂern – startÂed with The Great Train RobÂbery in 1903. Edwin S. Porter’s 10 minute film comÂbined westÂern themes with innoÂvÂaÂtive cinÂeÂmatÂic techÂniques (narÂraÂtive stoÂryÂtelling, parÂalÂlel editÂing, minor camÂera moveÂment, locaÂtion shootÂing, etc.). And the film took its inspiÂraÂtion from an event that became the stuff of legÂend: Butch CasÂsidy’s 1900 train heist, which endÂed with CasÂsidy blowÂing open a safe and escapÂing with $5,000 in cash.
Porter’s landÂmark film helped spark AmerÂiÂca’s love affair with WestÂern films. ThouÂsands of WestÂerns floodÂed cinÂeÂmas throughÂout the silent era — films like BronÂcho BilÂly and The GreasÂer (1914), Sky High (1922), and West of Hot Dog (1924). And though the WestÂern fadÂed briefly with the advent of sound film (cirÂca 1927), the genre staged a major comeÂback with the release of StageÂcoach (1939), a John Ford film that turned John Wayne into one of HolÂlyÂwood’s endurÂing stars.
