We all thrilled to Johannes VerÂmeer paintÂing his best-known porÂtrait as draÂmaÂtized in Peter WebÂber’s 2003 film Girl with a Pearl EarÂring. But for every heightÂened, scinÂtilÂlatÂing feaÂture film built around a well-known artist, there exists — or should exist, anyÂway — a docÂuÂmenÂtary that examÂines the work itself in greater detail. For such a counÂterÂpart to the aforeÂmenÂtioned ColÂin Firth/Scarlett JohansÂson vehiÂcle, I nomÂiÂnate Joe KrakoÂra’s 2001 VerÂmeer: MasÂter of Light, a rich look at the paintÂings of the well-known visuÂal chronÂiÂcler of sevÂenÂteenth-cenÂtuÂry midÂdle-class Dutch life, whose use of colÂor could reach pretÂty forÂmiÂdaÂble heights of scinÂtilÂlaÂtion itself. ProÂvidÂing its narÂraÂtion, we have a cerÂtain Meryl Streep.

StreepÂ’s words and those of the docÂuÂmenÂtary’s expert interÂvieÂwees must of necesÂsiÂty focus on VerÂmeer’s actuÂal paintÂings, since we know litÂtle of the painter’s life. And we don’t even have very many paintÂings to talk about: livÂing from 1632 to 1672, VerÂmeer turned out fewÂer than 40 canÂvasÂes. But what canÂvasÂes: MasÂter of Light goes into detail on his parÂticÂuÂlar masÂtery not only of light and colÂor, but of texÂtures, perÂspecÂtives, and seemÂingÂly minor but nonetheÂless painstakÂing touchÂes. We do, howÂevÂer, offer a viewÂing tip: unless you parÂticÂuÂlarÂly enjoy shots of light through winÂdows, you may want to begin the video at 5:22 or so. The analyÂsis of VerÂmeer takes its time comÂing, but when it begins, it offers a wealth of surÂprisÂing detail — just as do the paintÂings themÂselves. But don’t believe me; find out for yourÂself by viewÂing fifÂteen of them up close at the Google Art Project, includÂing Lady at the VirÂginal with a GenÂtleÂman just above, or, below, The Love LetÂter.
