This week, the HarÂry RanÂsom CenÂter at UT-Austin acquired the archives of SpaldÂing Gray (1941–2004), the actor and playÂwright most well known for his perÂforÂmance piece “SwimÂming to CamÂboÂdia” (clip here). AccordÂing to The New York Times, the archive spans some 40 years and feaÂtures perÂforÂmance noteÂbooks (see image above), diaries, and tapes of Gray’s perÂforÂmances, includÂing an earÂly verÂsion of “SwimÂming to CamÂboÂdia” recordÂed in 1983, and a clip from “Life InterÂruptÂed,” the monoÂlogue Gray was workÂing on when he died in 2004. Gray’s mateÂriÂals will reside alongÂside the papers of David Mamet, NorÂman MailÂer, James Joyce, Samuel BeckÂett and othÂers.
