“HisÂtoÂry in the makÂing,” Jay‑Z calls out a few bars into Beyoncé’s debut solo sinÂgle “Crazy in Love.”
The senÂtiÂment may be even more gerÂmane, when he does it in remix masÂter DJ CumÂmerÂbund’s irreÂsistible mashup “Crazy TogethÂer,” above.
The recent assemÂblage finds Queen Bey splitÂting screen time with The BeaÂtÂles, as DJ CumÂmerÂbund weaves “Crazy in Love” togethÂer with “Come TogethÂer.”
The video is as much fun as the seamÂless audio, with a hamÂmy cameo from Ringo Starr, courÂtesy of the 1981 comÂeÂdy CaveÂman, and Yoko Ono and James Brown doing some heavy liftÂing.
John Lennon’s take as Brown fires up his Sex Machine is priceÂless. It realÂly feels as if these unlikeÂly colÂlabÂoÂraÂtors were active, rather than pasÂsive conÂtribÂuÂtors.
Here’s a peek into how DJ CumÂmerÂbund arranged the audio clips.
Asked in a 2020 interÂview with DigÂiÂtal JourÂnal about the source of his inspiÂraÂtion, he respondÂed:
I’m not sure if you can call it inspiÂraÂtion exactÂly, but I have a neuÂroÂlogÂiÂcal conÂdiÂtion that causÂes me to hear and feel melodies and freÂquenÂcies where most canÂnot (in the wind, the soil, celesÂtial bodÂies, etc.) This ultiÂmateÂly causÂes me to conÂstantÂly hear songs on top of othÂer songs to the point of extreme frusÂtraÂtion and the only way to subÂdue that is to actuÂalÂly creÂate what I’m hearÂing in my head. It’s almost therÂaÂpeuÂtic for me, and I was even told I could die if I don’t conÂtinÂue to creÂate my works. It’s defÂiÂniteÂly like a curse someÂtimes but can also be a blessÂing as my music seems to bring a great deal of joy to milÂlions of peoÂple.
An underÂsung eleÂment of these crowd pleasÂing remixÂes is how skillÂfulÂly DJ CumÂmerÂbund ties things togethÂer by recordÂing supÂpleÂmenÂtal vocals and instruÂmenÂtals.
Ozzy Osbourne fronts “Earth, Wind and Ozzys,” which marÂries his 1980 solo hit “Crazy Train” with Earth Wind & Fire’s everÂgreen “SepÂtemÂber” so sucÂcessÂfulÂly, it’s a let down to rememÂber that a gorÂgeous, harÂmoÂnized “I’m going off the rails on a crazy train” is an inventÂed, not samÂpled disÂco choÂrus.
The comÂbiÂnaÂtions the DJ comes up with can’t help but force a fresh perÂspecÂtive on artists who would nevÂer in a milÂlion years have shared a stage or fanÂbase.
Step into a no man’s land where the rapid fire punk bratÂtiÂness of the Ramones can coexÂist with the HanÂson brothÂers’ lemon fresh, TulÂsa wholeÂsomeÂness, and CotÂton Eye Joe comes in out of nowhere.
When a title like “Me and CooÂlio Down by the SchoolÂyard” pops into your head, it arrives as a self-thrown gauntÂlet. You can’t not see it through to fruition.
The late rapper’s “FanÂtasÂtic VoyÂage” infusÂes Paul Simon’s genÂtly nosÂtalÂgic “Me And Julio Down By The School Yard” with some NSFW lyrics and a much hardÂer outÂlook.
The lo-fi joys of douÂble dutch and playÂground hoops from the origÂiÂnal Julio video present a plauÂsiÂble vision of a “place where (CooÂlio’s) kids can play outÂside withÂout livin’ in fear of a driÂve-by.”
This being a DJ CumÂmerÂbund proÂducÂtion, baseÂball Hall of Famer, MickÂey ManÂtle and footÂball coach John MadÂden, who were on hand for Julio, have to make room for his ever present muse, the late wrestling superÂstar Randy “Macho Man” SavÂage.
DJ CumÂmerÂbund is willÂing to conÂsidÂer requests, parÂticÂuÂlarÂly if you do a bit of homeÂwork to ensure that your choÂsen songs’ keys match up and their BPMs inhabÂit the same realm.
